10 Quick Tips about Hair Loss

Help I'm losing my hair. What should I do?

Hair loss is a very sensitive subject. I deal with many people with hair loss issues at my shop and at the salon. Some people have thinning issues due to medical problems such as alopecia, thyroid disease, lupus, diabetes, iron deficiency, eating disorders, anemia, and trichotillomania. Others have thin hair or loss issues due to poor genetics or simply they were born that way. Here are a few things to try if you have feel doomed with hair loss issues. I've connected some direct links to a few sites with some great information on some of my points.
  1. Go see your doctor. If you can determine what is causing the loss issue it will be easier to address. 
  2. Scalp massage- This can increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, increase relaxation and boost the strength of the hair root. 
  3. Biotin- Biotin or vitamin B7 contributes to the strength in hair and nails. Read more about this here.
  4. Oils- I personally do a hot oil treatment at least once a month and prescribe it to my hair clients often. My own mixture consists of olive or avacodo oil mixed with a dab of conditioner to help it spread a little less messy. I warm oil in the microwave before mixing in my conditioner. Always test temperature to avoid burns. Next I apply to scalp and comb down the strands with a wide tooth comb. I than bag or towel my hair to keep in heat from the scalp allowing for maximum results. Leave on for 30 minutes to 1 hour and shampoo off followed with conditioner. Be careful your tub or shower can get a little slippery. 
  5. Never brush wet hair, this can cause breakage, use a wide tooth comb or a wet brush. 
  6. No tight pony tails or tight braiding. This will also cause hair breakage. Instead if you must put up your hair try doing so with looser styles. Loose braids or side buns. Both are very trendy if done correctly. 
  7. Rosemary oil is said to help with hair growth also. You may use a carrier oil such as jojoba or grapeseed oil to dilute the oil. Massage directly on the alopecia spots. This can be done even daily if desired. 
  8. Kelp- Kelp helps regulate thyroid gland, healthy skin and hair. Find more great information here. I have hashimoto's thyroiditis and I definitely feel a difference myself when I take a kelp supplement.
  9. Avoid wigs and hats if possible. Wigs and hats can cause your scalp to sweat and sweat can cause your hair follicles to clog, damaging and possibly killing them all together. 
  10. Diet/ Vitamins, eat a diet high in protein and iron. Here are 10 Food for Healthy Hair.
